How to Make Sausage and Cheese Pinwheels
Although Sausage and Cheese Pinwheels start with a homemade dough, don’t let that fool you into thinking that the recipe is hard or that it requires a huge commitment.
The dough is very simple. It uses just:
- flour
- baking powder
- salt
- butter
- milk
Those ingredients get stirred together, kneaded briefly and then rolled out to get filled for the pinwheels.
It’s really just a few simple steps to create something flaky and delicious. Definitely much easier than it seems!
The filling itself is also simple – just cooked and crumbled pork sausage and shredded cheese.
The combination of ingredients is what makes Sausage and Cheese Pinwheels so good. It’s simplicity is what will keep it a go-to recipe for you for years to come!
Can I freeze the pinwheels?
You’ll be happy to know that this recipe is perfect for freezing!
You have a couple of different options for freezing Sausage and Cheese Pinwheels.
- Prep and bake the pinwheels. Cool completely. Place on a cookie sheet and flash freeze in the freezer for 60 minutes. Transfer frozen pinwheels to a freezer bag and return to the freezer.
To serve, place frozen pinwheels on a cookie and bake in a preheated 350 degree over for 5-10 minutes, until warmed through. - Prep the pinwheels through step 4 in the recipe (after rolling up, before slicing). Repeat for the second half. Wrap each roll in waxed paper, place in a freezer bag and freeze.
To serve, thaw frozen rolls on the counter for about 30 minutes, just long enough to make them easy to slice. Slice, place on a cookie sheet and bake at 375 degrees for 20 – 23 minutes, until heated through.
Customize Your Sausage and Cheese Pinwheels
There are lots of ways that you can tweak this recipe to make it your own.
Although Sausage and Cheese Pinwheels are delicious as is, you can definitely take the flavor up a notch with one of these ideas:
- Add sliced green onions with the sausage and cheese
- Stir 4 oz. of cream cheese into the cooked sausage before spreading on the dough
- Sprinkle some cooked, scrambled eggs on top of the sausage
- Add seasonings, such as garlic powder, black pepper, oregano, and/or paprika into the dough when you add the sale
- Swap the sausage for ground beef and season with taco seasoning
Sausage and Cheese Pinwheels
Ingredients
- 3 cups Flour
- 1 tablespoon Baking powder
- 1/2 tablespoon Salt
- 1/2 cup Butter or margarine (cut into pieces)
- 1/3 – 1/2 cup Milk
- 1 pound Bulk pork sausage (cooked, drained and crumbled small)
- 2 cups Cheddar cheese (shredded)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter or margarine until crumbly. Add milk as need until a soft but not sticky dough forms.
- Knead dough one minute.
- Divide dough in half and roll out.
- Top with a layer of cooked sausage and a layer of cheese. Roll up jelly roll style.
- Slice the roll into pieces, about an inch thick.
- Place onto a cookie sheet lined with foil and greased.
- Repeat with second batch.
- Bake at 375 degrees for 15 – 18 minutes, until golden brown.
